Nine Scouts and three Leaders/Helpers traveled in a very slow mini bus to Roughton Mill just south of Cromer.

On Saturday morning after an early breakfast it was off to see if we could find the sea.

The Scouts did the map reading. A hill was found (Incleborough Hill ) and some decided to climb it and then it was off to find the playground with the roundabout. The roundabout had been removed and a mini assault course had replaced it. Philip timed the Scouts to see who could complete the course the quickest.

We had lunch overlooking the sea at East Runton. After climbing on the rocks and trying to dam the sea it was off to Cromer Pier. It was dark by the time we got back to the minibus for the short drive back to the windmill.

The Scouts cooked individual mini Pizzas for starters, roast chicken legs in “breadcrumbs” with roast vegetables for the main course and glazed fruit on a sponge base for pudding. After washing and tiding up there was just enough time for a round of cards before bed.

Sunday was misty but not too misty to stop us abseiling. Tony and Colin provided the harnesses, ropes and hard hats and excellent instruction to help all those who wanted to abseil down the 53 feet of the outside of the windmill.

Shortly after lunch we all piled back into the minibus for the misty return journey to Peterborough.

23 Apollo Scouts in two teams tried to score a goal by throwing a ball into their opponents canoe whilst paddling a pedalo under the watchful eye of two safety boats.

Was anyone keeping score? Did anyone remember which team they were on?

After drying off it was time for a hamburger, hot dog and a drink.

Hello Leaders, helpers, supporters and members.

As the snow settles once more I hope you are enjoying the opportunity for some winter walks or tucked up warm enjoying this festive time of year. I would like to take this opportunity of thanking you for the brilliant work you have all done again in supporting Cambridgeshire Scouting during the year. This year has been another great year for Scouting in Cambridgeshire with some fantastic activities and again a growing movement with more activities and awards than ever.

Young people and adults are seeing the great things you are doing and continuing to join us in significant numbers. Christmas is also a time to think of those less fortunate than ourselves and I am sure that the Scouting sprit will ensure that we will all play our part.

May I wish you and your families well, enjoy the magic of Christmas and have a happy New Year. Please also enjoy a well earned break from Scouting for a while and see you next year.

2010.10.31 GRADBACH CAMP

We arrived at the Cottage at Gradbach Scout Campsite Friday night at around 10am on.

On Saturday after breakfast and preparing a packed lunch it was up onto the hills with a visit to Ludds Church. In the afternoon we visited Danebridge Trout Farm to catch 17 trout for our evening meal, using garden canes as rods.

The evening was spent together with the Explorers preparing cooking and eating our meal.

On Sunday, with the help of Camp Warden Paul, we built a Tyrolean Traverse . After everyone got together for a buffet lunch we tried Grass Skateboarding

Thanks to all those who took part for a very enjoyable weekend.

21-22 AUGUST – GLIDING

On Saturday and Sunday a total of 14 Scouts & 6 Leaders & helpers went to
Cambridge Gliding Centre at Gransden Lodge Airfield to learn about gliding.

With many thanks to Herfordshire Scouts who ran the days for us.

We each had a 20 minute flight in the Glider with an Instructor and we had the chance to fly the glider under close supervision.

At least the instuctor knew which way to fly, to get back to the air strip to land.

On Saturday the cloud base was 2000 feet. Sunday was much better with the cloud base at 4000 feet.

Whilst attempting to keep the glider level and at the same height the instuctor said “Have a look arround at the view”. This was one task too many for me.

On Sunday, the gliding centre was hosting an annual competition. In the morning, we got to see tens of gliders launched into the sky in quick succession, where they stayed circling in thermals before all proceeding passed the start line. This then gave us a few hours to do our own gliding in the clear skies whilst they completed a course that took them as far as Corby, before they returned and landed just as we were finishing.

The end of term Wide Game was organised by the Explorers. The main theme seemed to involve getting wet on a warm summer evening.How do you cross the Nene at Milton Ferry Bridge. Over the bridge? 10-11 July 2010 Wadenhoe Hike & Camp

Saturday was a very hot day and started with a hike in which three groups of Explorers and Scouts hiked from Barnwell Village Hall to the campsite at Wadenhoe.
The ten Scout with the help of 6 Explorers and 6 Leaders and helpers navigated their way over 2 routes of about 14km. One group got slightly lost but not lost enough to miss the shop in Titchmarsh selling ice creams. I’ve never seen Scouts drink so much water it must have been hot. 29C in the shade. The Scouts pitched their own tents and cooked their own meals before joining the Explorers again at the camp fire.
After cooking their own breakfast and breaking camp on Sunday it was off for a short walk to Fermyn Woods near Brigstock.

Four 2nd Nene teams entered this year’s adventure through the mysterious land of Zatego that appears in Ferry Meadows each March. Each team was set tasks in the “I’m A Scout Get Me Out of Here” competition.
For the first time in its 26 year history there was a competitive aspect with teams collecting stars according to how well tasks were completed. Bases were organised by Leaders, Helpers and Explorers from around Nene District including Apollo Troop and our friends from Challenger Troop and Orton Explorers

Greg, Philip, Emma & Steve checked out a campsite near Buxton.

They were so impressed that Greg provisionally booked “The Cottage” for the weekend of 29-31 October.

Not a cloud in the sky but cold and muddy.
19 Scouts from APOLLO and CHALLENGER together with 11 Leaders & Helpers completed the 13km hike from Sawtry to Yaxley with the help of Graham who acted as Route Marshall & competition co-ordinator.
Traditionally, at this time of year, ended at a Chip Shop at Greg’s request.
The competition was to find FLAGS & mark their postion on a map together with their grid references. Each Flag represented a letter, which, when rearranged spelt a word.
The winning Group was Group 3. Well done especially to Nathan who did most of the Grid refs.

Racing was on a number of tracks – several of which were changed during the week – and in one case during a racing session! Some very fast lap and overall times were recorded. Results & photos of the event can be viewed HERE.

5 Dec 2009 – APOLLO – Sawtry to Yaxley Test (Chip Shop) Walk

Six Leaders and helpers walked the route in preparation for the January 2010 “Chip Shop Walk”

Part of the route was on a footpath that ended in a wood whilst a “Shoot” was in progress. We were allowed to walk on private land to get back to a road. We will not be using this part of the route on 30th January.

Well done to 2nd Nene Explorers. They won BLOOD & GORE, BRAIN TEASING/TEAM BUILDING.

CLIMBING. – Well done to James who came 1st in the climbing. The top 6 climbers won a trip for a days climbing with an instructor, this time, not on a climbing wall but on a real rock face. The 2nd Nene Explorers won the overall Explorers Competition.

WELL DONE.

At Easter, 7 Scouts from Apollo Troop were part of the party of 22 Scouts, Explorers, Leaders and Instructors from Nene District who took part in the 59th SWAN Sailing Expendition to The Norfolk Broads. The week was spent learning to sail 24ft – 28ft Cabin Yachts on The Broads and exploring the rivers and broads with Scouts from across the UK. Photos can be seen HERE & HERE

Zatego – the Nene District annual themed night exercise was held on March 21st. Apollo troop only had a small contingent (16) this year and 2 of Scouts forgot on the night. However those who did attend enjoyed the activity late into the night.

The days programme covered the requirements of the Scout Aeronautics Badge through a mixture of ground training and approximately 25 minutes of one to one flying time.
A successful air experience day organised by the Hertfordshire Scouts at Cambridge Gliding Centre took place today.

A successful walk in the snow took place today. We started at Bainton at about 1.30pm and finished at Fryz Chip Shop, Bretton, at about 6.30pm.

Snowball fiights along the way were optional.

This year’s Remembrance Sunday Service at Orton Holy Trinity Church Longueville was attended by the Group with a very smart and well behaved contingent from Apollo troop in attendance. The silver granite of the war memorial shone in fitting tribute to the fallen of Orton Longueville thanks to the efforts of the Scouts, Cubs, Beaver’s and Leaders who spent Saturday morning cleaning it. Thanks to Matt for reminding us and to Graham for organising things on the ground and up the ladder.There is also more information on 90 years of Remembrance, Scouts at the Cenotaph and the Two Minutes Silence.

The Event was open to all APOLLO Scouts including those in the Troop in July 2008 who may now be Explorers.
All 14 Scouts who took part successfully completed the over 42km ride on a bright and sunny afternoon.
The only casualty was a helpers brake cable just before the start, which, with help from a parent was replaced.

We were Lucky. The weather remained fine but the wind tested our peddling power in places.
We started at Orton Mere and finished at the Chip Shop at Orton Wistow. – No CHIPS. It’s closed on a Sunday.
Did we complete the MARATHON distance?
NO. That’s why the actual event on 20th September ( see WHAT’s ON) will now START & FINISH at the Chip Shop.
Yes it will be open when we finish on 20th.

Well done to all the Cycling Groups who all completed the course of over 10km. All groups visited the 6 bases although not in the same order. Some found out what happens when you hold the map the wrong way up – you end up in the wrong place. Another group was turned away from a base – they had ended up at the wrong base.

It was mostly dry when we pitched our tents at Fieldhead Campsite on Friday night. The tents & pitching were tested by the overnight heavy rain – all remained dry. We went on a 10 mile hike on Saturday near Mam Tour. The rain showers weren’t to much of a nuisance. The Scouts cooked their own evening meal of spaghetti Bolognaise. This was followed by a fruit chocolate fondue. The universal cry was “no double dipping” & Greg wasn’t even with us. On Sunday we all went to Speedwell & Peak Caverns. Very impressive. The Mayor, Pat Nash, the Chief Executive of the Council, Gillian Beasley, & John Peach, Leader of the Council were there to meet us as we entered Central Park and they wish to pass on their thanks to the youth members for taking part and leading the Mayors horse drawn carriage through the City. We don’t have the exact date yet but we can look forward to taking part leading the Mayor again next year.
District Commissioner Trevor Watson said:-
“Thanks too to the leadership who supported the event. I hope the Groups that had fund raising stalls made a penny or two. Those of us manning the publicity tent had a large number of enquiries and I will be contacting many GSL’s with names and contact details of prespective young people and leaders shortly.”

The Leaders & Helpers set up camp on Friday night and the Scouts arrived on Saturday

Scouts camped in patrols & took part in traditional camping and Scouting skills often in the rain.

Most meals were cooked in patrols on traditional wood fires.

It is with great sadness that it is announced that Geoff Keighley who was known to many in the 2nd Nene Group and Nene District as ’The Admiral’ of the SWAN Norfolk Broads Sailing Expedition, passed away peacefully at 3pm on Friday 16th May 2008.

Geoff was taken ill while on The Broads with friends on 21st April and admitted into Norwich Hospital ICU. A few days before he died he was transferred to Winchester by Helicopter.

My thoughts and prayers go out to: Anne his wife; Kester, Judy, Susan, Paul Piers and Gemma his children, and also their partners and families.

17 children and 5 leaders went for Beavers day out at Flag Fen.

Although the weather was cold and at times wet, they had a great day.They explored the round houses and even cooked twists and showed a group of girl guides how to make them. The group went on an organised tour which included information about family life in the times of the iron age.

As a result of their efforts (together with other parishioners) the Autumn leaves have been cleared away, memorials cleared of litter and dead flowers, paths cleaned and tidied, trees cleared of ivy, gutters downspouts and drains cleaned out at Holy Trinity.

It has been agreed the participants are due their Environment Partnership Award as a result of their efforts, as the Churchyard is now prepared for the Spring and Summer.

The next event is likely to be in the Autumn in preparation for Rememberance Sunday at which it is hoped the Cub Packs and Beaver Colonies can also be represented.

The older members of the 2nd Nene Apollo Scout Troop were seconded to carry out a top secret intelligence reconnaissance mission in a 3rd world country. Unfortunately their plane was shot down behind enemy lines and they needed to navigate to an agreed extraction point within a limited time scale.

The good news was that all survived without injury. But the enemy knew the location of the crash site and were looking for survivors. The Roads were heavily patrolled, so the best means of escape was to get off the roads as soon as possible and use public footpaths through wooded areas.

Before the wreckage of the plane burst into flames a radio, OS map an aerial reconnaissance map of the area and a compass were retrieved.

The group first contacted Sierra Hotel “Scout HQ” on the radio. Then identified themselves with the call sign Alpha Tango “Apollo Troop”. When asked for the password, the reply was “lost scouts”.

Sierra Hotel advised them of the extraction point grid reference and extraction time.

Having found the extraction point on the map. Alpha Tango had to find where they were (the crash site). Then plot a suitable route to the extraction point.

Once at the extraction point they contacted Sierra Hotel with the call sign and password as advised that they were ready for extraction.

To simulate being lost, the group weredriven blind folded to an unknown location.

The extract point was changed twice, once because the rescue helicopter (Zulu 99) came under enemy fire and again, later in the mission, when it had to return to base to refuel.

The evening was enjoyed by all.

The group found that they needed to have good boots and gaiters if they were to keeps their feet dry when walking through mud.

The group had to carry a special package. It was not only heavy but buzzed when tilted. Not the best thing to have with you when behind enemy lines.

There were threats to bury it in the mud.

There were two routes – the longer was over13km. The longest hike the Troop has done for many years. It was a lovely bright Sunny day. 16 Scouts in 5 groups took part in the walk starting around 1.30pm. There were questions to answer along the way. Usually most slow down near the end of the hike but finishing at a Fish & Chip shop meant that everyone speeded up. We were all eating chips by 6.30pm.

A big THANK YOU to all those who helped on the day. Everywhere we went, Greg was there first. Might have been because he used his car.

9 Scouts found out what it was like to breathe air underwater and experience the underwater world at Whittlsey swimming pool with a Discover Scuba Diving introduction to scuba diving. It is was run by DIVE IN LTD. For more information.

The Discover Scuba experience did not lead to a qualification but all the Scouts got a Certificate for taking part. Not only did they spend an hour Scuba Diving but also an hour snorkeling. The pool was warmer than usual, at a ‘claimed’ 30C.

To help teach map reading the Leaders devised a game, which turned out to be noisy and enjoyable.

The Rocket Defence Force worked hard to deprive the “Launch Operatives” of their “Launch Authority”

Many thanks from the Quartermaster and Building Manager to the Scouts, Cub, helpers, parents and a grumpy old man, who turned up on Saturday morning to help dig a trench for installing a new water pipe. Thanks to your efforts, the pipe is now buried so deep that it should not freeze up in winter. Plumbing works will be carried out soon, so there will be an outside tap in the field for 2008, ready for outdoor activities.

A very smart contingent from Apollo Troop joined other members of the group to attend the annual service and 2 minutes silence at Holy Trinity Church to commemorate all who have suffered because of war. Apollo Troop paraded our flag, took the collection in church, laid a wreath of poppies on behalf of the group and laid poppy crosses.

Many thanks to those who helped with the clear up of the churchyard in preparation for Remembrance Sunday. There was a good turnout from the congregation and the wider community including small contingents from Apollo Troop and the Air Training Corp. After a couple of hours work the Churchyard looked so much tidier.

52 Scouts and Explorers from all over Peterborough spent an action packed day at the ‘Snozone’ .
Verdicts on the day were ‘wicked’, ‘awesome’, ‘brill’. A great day was had by all and the unity from the youngsters, some who had come as individuals from various scout troops, was a credit to them all.
My thanks go to the Leaders who dutifully followed from one activity to another looking after bags and bodies, Kevin Farrant, Jo Christopher, David Robinson, Sharon and Chris Pallister – thanks to you all.
Another successful and fun event for the youngsters in our 100 years celebrations.
A mother of “an individual scout from his scout troop ” who went said -
“I have to say that the whole event was brilliant. He thoroughly enjoyed himself with all the activities on offer. I didn’t get to bed till 1.40am this morning with all the excited talk !!!!!!
I did verbally Thank Jo, Kev and Rusty however also Thanks to Chris
and Sharon who were talking when I left !……….when’s the next trip to Snozone ??!!

The Cubs & Beavers had been taking part in activities and events to gain their Health and Fitness and their Healthy Eating badges and were delighted that Shane could go down to the hall to present them with their badges.
Each Beaver received a certificate as well as their badges.
This also earned the young Cubs and Beavers their “meet someone from the community” badge. Our other assistants cubs / scout also had a thank you certificate.

All credit to Mang for her work in producing a surprise for the Muskrat Beavers.

21 Sep 2007 – Autumn Camp – Long Mynd & Snailbeach Mine

James said ” Long Mynd camp was a great weekend. The activities ranged from map reading to exploring an old lead mine.The walk was fun with the added excitement of only being shadowed by the leaders which made it more enjoyable. Overall it was a great weekend.”

We departed from Peterborough on time, called into McDonalds at Shrewsbury. Then the fun started. The A49 was closed at Little Stretton due to road works so we took to the narrow country lanes with Ian’s van leading the way. Climbing up an incline we met a 4×4 coming the other way. Fortunately it backed up to let us all pass.
We knew the key code for the key case at the Long Mynd Adventure Centre but no one had told us the gate was locked with a combination padlock. Perseverance triumphed in the end and we were able to drive up the track to the Centre.

Up early on the Saturday morning, and after breakfast it was up onto the hills in two groups for some map reading training. We met up at lunchtime. We continued walking in the afternoon and were able to watch the gliders being winched up into the clouds. The weather played tricks with us by raining – waterproofs on – then stopping – waterproofs off, then raining again. The late afternoon was spent preparing the evening “Banquet”. Carefully supervised by Mike. The three course meal was rapidly devoured. There was a choice for each coarse. Some of us had a bit of everything. Greg was happy – he loves garlic mushrooms.

The Scouts spend the first part of Sunday morning navigating in cars between the Centre and Snailbeach along the narrow twisting lanes. At one point the cars were seen approaching each other – one of them must have been going the right way.
The visit to Snailbeach Mine was very interesting Thanks to Adrian for showing us around and taking us underground. After lunch we departed for Peterborough and actually arrived 15 minutes early. Is this a record?

Thanks to all the Leaders & Helpers who made the weekend possible and thanks to the Scouts for putting in the effort to make the weekend so enjoyable.

1 Aug 2007 – Sunrise Ceremony – Peterborough

Scouts aged five to 101, renewed their Scout Promise in Cathedral Square just before 8am at the same time as 28 million other Scouts from all over the world.

One of the Scouts from APOLLO TROOP said:-

“We had a great time today at the sunrise ceremony. We went to the town hall at 11 and met the scouts from Connecticut, we all sat in the Council chambers, renewed our promise again and also said the American promise, or oath, then we were invited into the Mayor’s parlour for orange and biscuits and a chat with the Mayor!

There were two other Scots from the Apollo Troop, a couple of Matley cubs and a few more Peterborough Scouts.

The Americans then went to look round the cathedral.
One lady told me they had stopped at Coventry last night and seen the bomb damage to the cathedral there.

The Stamps, from the top left, are,

1st – 11 of the 12 astronauts who walked on the Moon were once Scouts
Designed by Gez Fry, with an intentionally modern, manga-style look, the first of the Scouting Mint Stamps commemorates the astronomical fact that 11 of the 12 astronauts who walked on the moon were former members of the Scouting movement. The stamp shows a young Scout looking to the stars.

46p – The youngest climber of the highest peaks on all 7 continents was a Scout
Continuing the theme of exploration, the 46p stamp shows a couple of Scouts scaling a mountain, celebrating the fact that the youngest climber of the highest mountain peak on each continent was once a member of the Scouts.

48p – 450,000 UK Scouts take part in community projects every year

Although famed for their outdoor activities, the principles and ethics behind the Scout movement are just as significant as the camping trips. The 48p stamp focuses on the 450,000 UK Scouts who take part in community projects every year, showing a young Scout planting a tree.

54p – Adult Scout volunteers give over 360 million hours of time each year
With 28 million members around the world, it’s no surprise that there are plenty of adults involved in the Scout movement too. The 54p stamp shows an older Scout teaching a young member archery, celebrating the 360 million hours given by adult volunteers annually.

69p – The first non-stop solo flight around the world was made by a Scout
The 69p stamp returns to the theme of exploration and adventure, and features two airborne members of the movement, commemorating the first non-stop solo flight around the world – also made by a former Scout, of course.

78p – Scouting is the largest youth movement in the world with 28 million members

The final Special Stamp in the set looks to the phenomenal success of the movement, taking this year’s 21st World Scout Jamboree as its cue. The stamp features a veritable troop of young Scouts, representing the fact that Scouting is the largest youth movement in the world, with 28 million members.

4 Teams of Cyclists rode through Ferry Meadows to Alwalton Lock & Mill Lane Castor hunting for letters on tent pegs.

Little did they know that the letters they noted down formed an anagram of a bird.
‘Well done to 2 of the groups who found all the correct letters and solved the anagram in the time allowed.

Burgers and hot dogs were cooked by Greg for the hungry cyclists & parents at the end.

· Sleeping in a survival bag shelter
· Cooking a meal of dehydrated food on lightweight stoves.
· Building a shelter from natural materials and sleeping in it
· Lighting fires without matches.

Following our groups use of Icelandic tents at Ferry Meadows Centenary
camp, Second Nene Scout Group had been requested to provide a
Demonstration Troop for erecting and packing traditional tents.
Sunday 1st July saw a small intrepid band of volunteers (should that read
press-ganged) Scouts and a Cub at the Party in the Park at Central Park,
Peterborough.

After flag break at 12 noon, we had a tent up by 12:40.
Whilst the labour force had a break, the leaders took the tent back down
and folded away, then 13:00 next demo, repeated hourly with members of
public having a go. We appear to have won over at least one ‘promo’ guy
from Hereward FM, as he passed his details to Trevor Watson, with a view
to joining Scouting as an adult helper / leader. Unfortunately he lives
near Cambridge, so we are unlikely to benefit directly, but it all
benefits the movement….

The weather was less than wonderful, overcast, with a number of short
sharp showers, but well done to all those who came along and did their
bit to promote scouting and Second Nene. A shame there weren’t more
none-scouting public in attendance for the very enjoyable event.

Several potential new cubs/scouts have expressed an interest in joining
us. It is hoped two will be in attendance this week.

Party in the Park

We quickly built base camp in the grass area near to the course finish. Volunteers were sort, to pull the canoes out of the water at the bottom of the run.

We soon had all scouts kitted out in buoyancy aids and helmets, they grabbed canoes and paddles and made for the top of the course.

At least 4 runs down were made with some appearing to spend more time going down backwards than forwards. Cries of ‘smile ‘ look as though you are enjoying it? and ‘your not wet enough’ echoed down the course.

At least 2 brave parents had a go too….

The weather was kind to us, when the sun shone for our picnic.
Our tents and shelters were useful when it rained.

Next year we may expand our camp to include a barbeque and gazebo…any volunteers?

There is also a campfire, BBQ and, Wide Game. Explorer Leaders Mike & Amanda have kindly offered to look after the teams as a link with Explorers.

The 22 February 2007 is the 150th birthday of Lord Robert Baden-Powell, Founder of the World Scout Movement. The anniversary is celebrated by nearly 28 million Scouts across the world as ‘Founder’s Day’ and will be marked by parties, events and activities, normally on the Sunday closest to the date.

Co-incidentally, Baden-Powell shared his birthday with his wife, Olave, who later became World Chief Guide. Girlguiding UK celebrates the same day as ‘Thinking Day.’

A special national service took place at Westminster Abbey attended by Scouts and Guides from all parts of the UK. It was an occasion, not just to celebrate the Founder, but also the special spirit of unity that exists between the two youth movements.

The day is an opportunity to give thanks for the Founder’s life and work and to celebrate diversity in culture, colour and creed.

During 2007 the Woodland Trust have teamed up with The Scout Association to offer all Scouts the chance to plant trees as part of the 2007 centenary celebrations.

With the help of The Scout Association at least 100 Centenary Groves will be planted. These will be new areas of native woodland, each made up of thousands of trees.

For more info on the hike of 9th February see the 9th Feb NEWS Section. Some Leader & helpers went on a proving walk on 13 Jan and found Monty the Moose, who is pictured below, in his shelter in a field near King’s Cliffe. According to the label around his neck he was recently thrown out of the Mounties for impersonating a horse. He travelled to England for the Christmas period, hoping to pass himself off as a reindeer and help Santa to deliver presents to all the children of King’s Cliffe who had been good in 2006. Unfortunately there’s not a lot of work for Moose these days. He’s tried the moosic industry, but he is tone deaf, then he got a job in a mooseum, but his antlers kept damaging the exhibits. Monty’s ambition is to be a stand up comedian. He likes people to stop and have a chat, sometimes he can be very amoosing.
When asked when he was going home he said he didn’t know but that it may be before the 9 Feb 2007. BUT see the NEWS Section for 9 Feb for more info.

Mingling with successful youngsters from city schools was veteran DofE award winner Anne Watson, who achieved the Gold Award in 1963.

A Grant from “Awards For All”? ( part of the National Lottery Fund ) has helped to pay for a new fence at the 2nd Nene ( St Peters’ ) Scout HQ on the Orton Longuiville School Site.

Group Scout Leader Anne Watson said “We are very pleased with our new fence which helps improve the security around our site for our Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Explorers Scouts.”

Fieldhead campsite is situated in Edale Village, in The Peak District National Park see http://www.edale-valley.co.uk/fieldhead.htm .
Accommodation was lightweight tents plus a mess tent.

Activities included hill walking in The Peak District National Park, navigation training, preparation and cooking of meals on lightweight stoves, Saturday evening barbecue and cycling.

Apollo Troop Scout Leader Greg said “For St. George’s Day we had nearly half of the troop attend, they were very smart and a credit to the troop.
After the service, the County Commissioner came over to speak to the Scouts and ask about their activities

Martin Hall, divisional commissioner for Nene Scout districts, said: “This is an opportunity for more than 1,000 Scouts in and around Peterborough to meet together and declare their commitment to scouting.”

The pararde, which always takes place on a Sunday, was actually on St George’s Day this year.
APOLLO Troop found themselves following a Dragon in the parade which was being helped along by PEGASUS Cubs.

SWAN this year tested the sailing skills of the skippers and crew.

The weather was varied with high winds at all times.
No sailing was possible on the first Saturday.
The sun did come out, after the boats were returned to the boat yards at the end of the week.

10 Mar 2006 – Zatogo 2006

The MIZ (Military Intelligence Zatego) Special Agents where sent on a Mission to find Zatego heros Harry Munsen and Gus Motley.

Their last know whereabouts was the NewZealand Rugby Team Training Camp. Having missed them here the MIZ Special Agents tracked them through numerous countries inluding China, USA, Switzerland – where they had to ski to try to catch up with them. In each country they picked up a clue which they where able to decode on the outskirts of London. Having then been sent to “Harry’s Bar”, avoiding the resident drunk, (see photo above) who had drunk the bar dry, they managed to escape arrest for underage drinking, before returning to central London and a well earned rest. Unfortunately Harry & Gus remained elusive.

We have already received some direct feedback and would be pleased to hear everyone’s views as the 2nd Nene leaders only see the Scouts from the troop for such a small part of the evening. Feedback is very useful when planning next year’s event. Thanks to all the leaders and parents who made the even possible.

Due to the small number of Scouts involved the Navigation Exercise was changed, at the last minute, to a trip to the Peak District. The weather was fine and sunny and the walk along Froggatt Edge was amazing.

To all the Scouts, Leaders and Helpers of Apollo Troop,

Thank you very much for the wonderful presents that you gave me for Christmas, you are very generous and I was most touched.

I have used the penknife already – there is a useful gadget for releasing tyre pressure. The compass and map case will be very useful when out walking as will the flask for my coffee. I plan to share the Port with the other leaders with some Stilton Cheese at a camp or on the Norfolk Broads – preferably after one of Mike Pummell’s camp banquets.

Tents, sleeping bags and blankets have been donated by the 2nd Nene Scout Group, parents and friends. These have been collected from the HQ, taken to London and flown out to Pakistan. Thank you to all those who helped.

A donation was recently made by Pegassus pack to Magpas.
Magpas is the emergency medical charity for Cambridgeshire and Peterborough. Volunteers are dedicated to saving lives and reducing suffering for patients at the scenes of serious incidents.

However, saving lives costs money and Magpas is funded solely by donations from the general public.

18 Nov 2005 – Autumn Camp

The Autumn Camp was organised differently this year. With a young Scout
Troop the emphasis was on navigation training and fun. We arrived Friday
evening and made preparations for an early start on Saturday. Saturday
morning was spent learning about map reading and navigation whilst
exploring the forest around the campsite. After lunch various games
took place and a Prize winning ‘Pacing Competition’ followed. After more
exploration on the way back to the campsite, the evening meal preparations were
completed and a Banquet followed.
The Leaders and helpers were quite happy to take a rest BUT the idea of a Widegame proved very popular with the Scouts.

Sunday morning was spent on the HIGH ROPES course. We took it in turns
to fall off the equipment, some more frequently than others. It was very
reassuring to be attached to a safety rope at all times.

Apollo Scouts went on a lightweight hike and camp over the weekend.

Ten scouts from the Apollo troop of the 2nd Nene Scout Group walked from Stamford to Maxey part of the way walking along the Torpel Way. On arrival at the site they pitched hike tents to camp overnight.

The Scouts cooked their own evening meal on portable gas or petrol stoves trying out various foods suitable for lightweight camping.

After clearing up from the meal, the evening was spent, playing games and familiarising themselves with the next day’s route.

After cooking their own breakfasts on lightweight stoves on Sunday morning the Scouts hikes to Glinton via Peakirk.

Group Bowling Evening at RAF Wittering Bowling Alley
The Group Executive booked the alley for the evening and Leaders, Parents, Friends & children joined us in a social evening of bowling.
Prizes were awarded for the highest & lowest scores to both adulds & children.
Judging by the noise a great time was had by all.

Snacks and drinks were available from the bar during the evening

We were again blessed with good weather for the Peterborough St. Georges’s Day Parade and a very smart (but small) contingent represented the troop ? thank you to all those who made the effort to attend. Thank you also to those who couldn?t attend but sent apologies.

The date of next year’s event to mark St. Georges’s Day will be announced as soon as possible, as always please look out for this event and make every effort to reserve the date (usually the nearest Sunday to 23rd April) so that as many Scouts as possible can attend.

This year’s annual Easter sailing expedition was another great success. The Peterborough contingent of 15 was part of the expedition of 79 that sailed 17 yachts for a week on the Norfolk Broads. Congratulations to: Stephen for a successful week in charge of a 24′ traditional sailing yacht; and also to Matt, Stuart, Nick, Edward, Mick Pummell and Emma Jackson for attaining their SWAN Intermediate / RYA Level 2 Keelboat Certificates.

4 Dec 2004 – Day Evening Walk. Yarwell to Orton Wistow

We met at Yarwell Cross Roads. Three Groups including one group of Explorers walked to Orton Wistow Chip Shop.

The route went past Yarwell Mill, Wandsford Nene Valley Station, Water Newton Mill, Cator Mill and Alwalton.

A first aid training incident ( Matt had hurt his head) was dealt with near Castor Station.

The weather was fine and the river level had dropped signifcantly from that seen on the plannning hike two weeks earlier.

The troop was well represented at this import event thanks to all for making the effort to attend.
Thank you to Matt Belcher and team (Jake & Josh, Sam, Andrew and Tom) for cleaning the War Memorial on the day before. It was very much appreciated by the Church Wardens.

We were entertained by a Circus Performer from Cumbria. Everyone tried various skills including juggling and diabolo ( no I didn’t know what it was either )

Ever seen fire juggling? IN THE DARK? and even more impressive a FLAME filled diabolo 20 feet in the air – thats about 6 metres.

15 – 17 Oct 2004 – LONG MYND

9 Scouts, 2 explorers and 9 Leader/Helpers went on a walking weekend to the Long Mynd.

Saturday was spent walking on various routes up and over the Long Mynd in the low cloud, rain and occassional sunshine.

Saturday evening the Scouts and Explorers prepared 3 main courses and 2 sweets, all under Mike’s carefull guidance.

Sunday we visited Ironbridge and went in the Tar Tunnell.
