The first thing to do was to erect the Emergency Shelters http://www.poundland.co.uk/product-range/a-z/outdoor-solutions-emergency-shelter/ in the woods using the trees and bushes to tie the shelters to. After a drink and an explore of the woods it was off to bed.
In the morning it was time to cook breakfast on a Hex Stove. Does porridge taste better with some hot chocolate powder in it – yes apparently? Lunch was also cooked on the hex stoves. Evening meal was to be cooked on open fires – wood collecting takes along time. Just enough time to put up the shelters made with tarpaulins. Fires were lit with the help of flint strikers and cotton wool. Once the fires had died down and the chicken prepared and wrapped up in foil we just needed to wait whilst it cooked. Vegetables sweet corn and fruit were also cooked it tin foil. Sunday morning the fire was re-lit from the embers from Saturday night. After a tidy up it was off to the air rifle range. Lunch was chicken sandwiches – now we know why we need to keep some of the cooked chicken from Saturday night. None of the forecast rain arrived so the shelters were never really tested and the hottest place in Britain on Saturday was less than 30 miles away. The Scouts arrived back at the HQ, on time, very quiet, and very sleepy – I wonder why. . |
